The Magic Lens II follows the same format as the Magic Lens I but builds on it with increasing complexity. It is entirely based on four-level sentence analysis. This analysis of parts of speech, parts of sentence, phrases, and clauses is Michael Clay Thompson's original and enormously successful approach to teaching grammar. It uses his "t-models" to illustrate how sentences are constructed, exquisitely showcasing complex grammar relationships as simple but beautiful illustrations. This full-color book not only includes a comprehensive look at grammar; it delves deeply into common grammar errors and usage problems and includes detailed explanations of how grammar affects punctuation. Michael often uses the sentences of great classic writers to show children examples of interesting grammar in some of the most famous literary works in the English language. Practice is provided at every stage so that children are immediately applying what they have learned and actively building a thorough understanding of the inner workings of the language. Note: New to the fifth edition of this book is a special bonus feature: QR codes that link to audio of Michael Clay Thompson talking about important, potentially confusing, or interesting facts about grammar so that children can hear additional grammar content from the author himself.

This excellent prose translation of Homer's epic poem of the 9th century BC recounts one of Western civilization's most glorious tales, a treasury of Greek folklore and myth that maintains an ageless appeal for modern readers. A cornerstone of Western literature, The Odyssey narrates the path of a fascinatingly complex hero through a world of wonders and danger-filled adventure. After ten bloody years of fighting in the Trojan War, the intrepid Odysseus heads homeward, little imagining that it will take another ten years of desperate struggle to reclaim his kingdom and family. The wily hero circumvents the wrath of the sea god Poseidon and triumphs over an incredible array of obstacles, assisted by his patron goddess Athene and his own prodigious guile. From a literal descent into Hell to interrogate a dead prophet to a sojourn in the earthly paradise of the Lotus-eaters, the gripping narrative traverses the mythological world of ancient Greece to introduce an unforgettable cast of characters: one-eyed giants known as Cyclopses, the enchantress Circe, cannibals, sirens, the twin perils of Scylla and Charybdis, and a fantastic assortment of other creatures. Remarkably modern in its skillful use of flashbacks and parallel line of action, Homer's monumental work is now available in this inexpensive, high-quality edition sure to be prized by students, teachers, and all who love the great myths and legends of the ancient world.Sku: 9780486406541

If the Iliad is the world's greatest war epic, the Odyssey is literature's grandest evocation of an everyman's journey through life. Odysseus' reliance on his wit and wiliness for survival in his encounters with divine and natural forces during his ten-year voyage home to Ithaca after the Trojan War is at once a timeless human story and an individual test of moral endurance. E. V. Rieu’s translation has long been beloved and celebrated by scholars and readers alike, and for this Penguin Classics edition, classicist D. C. H. Rieu has revised the work of his father. This edition also includes an introduction by Peter V. Jones.Sku: 9780140449112

Willa Cather's lyrical and bittersweet novel of a middle-aged man losing control of his life is a brilliant study in emotional dislocation and renewal. Professor Godfrey St. Peter is a man in his fifties who has devoted his life to his work, his wife, his garden, and his daughters, and achieved success with all of them. But when St. Peter is called on to move to a new, more comfortable house, something in him rebels. And although at first that rebellion consists of nothing more than mild resistance to his family's wishes, it imperceptibly comes to encompass the entire order of his life. The Professor's House combines a delightful grasp of the social and domestic rituals of a Midwestern university town in the 1920s with profound spiritual and psychological introspection.Sku: 9780679731801

Now your child can enjoy The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson as a Michael Clay Thompson language-illustrated classic. The novel is reproduced in its entirety and includes Michael's "language illustrations"—close-ups of poetic techniques, four-level analyses of interesting grammar, and comments about writing strategies. Challenging vocabulary is defined at the bottom of each page. The novel is a disturbing account of murder and personality, good and evil, and dangerous experiments in a foggy London of the nineteenth century. Michael describes it as “one of literary history’s great stories of intuitive inspiration.... The reasons that Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are famous all lie within the book itself. It is an extraordinary book by one of literature’s most talented writers." In addition, Stevenson’s “On Some Technical Elements of Style in Literature” is included to demonstrate that the author knew what he was about in the craft of writing. Michael believes that Stevenson is under-appreciated as a serious writer and says that this essay is “one of the best statements in literary history of what a supremely talented writer was thinking."
